Semester 1, 2008
Assessment Item 3
Academic Essay
Due Date: 4.00pm, Friday, 13 June, 2008 (Week 14)
Length: 1,500 words
Weighting: 35%
You are required to write an academic essay of 1,500 words.
You must answer ONE of the following three questions:
1.) The personal and subjective approach of the Personal Essay might be entertaining but it adds little to the stock of human knowledge. Do you agree or disagree?
2.) The Review Essay does not deserve to be called an essay because it only provides a perspective on a very limited number of texts. Do you agree or disagree?
3.) The most important element that the Personal Essay and the Review Essay have in common is that they each aim to add to the stock of human knowledge. Discuss.
The criteria for this academic essay are Learning Outcomes 1 to 9, which can be found on page 1 of the course outline (included in the course readings booklet). Students should have these Learning Outcomes to hand while composing their essay.
Students will be expected to write in a fashion that shows the benefits of the technical exercises of Assessment Item 1 and the descriptive writing task of Assessment Item 2.
Students need to use an appropriate referencing style correctly and consistently.
All assignments are to be typed and double-spaced and handed in with a properly completed cover sheet.
Students should consult the course outline for the location of campus-specific submission points.
Students should also pay particular attention to the sections of the course outline dealing with plagiarism and non-discriminatory language.
